Drew and Nathaniel were out running errands. Nathaniel came home to hang out with me and Drew went back out.
Drew: "Don't miss me too much."
Nathaniel: "I like Mommy much better."
One night in bed the following week.
Nathaniel (to me): "I like Daddy much better."
Nathaniel's Uncle Craig was holding him and they were standing across from Drew.
Nathaniel (to Craig): "You have a big mouth."
Nathaniel looks at Drew. "You have a big mouth too. Can you eat him?"
Nathaniel sniffs me. "Mommy, what do you smell like?"
Me: "I don't know."
Nathaniel sniffs me and smiles. "Whipped cream and cherries."
I bought Nathaniel a little red wooden robot from the Saint Louis Art Museum. I took it out of my bag and gave it to him.
Nathaniel: "I don't like that robot. I don't want it."
Me: "Really? Don't you mean, 'Thank you for the robot, Mommy,'?"
Nathaniel: "I don't like it."
Nathaniel watches me play with the robot and sees that you can bend it move it's body parts around.
"That robot is pretty cool, Mommy. I want that robot."
Nathaniel and I lie in his bed. Drew walks into the room. Nathaniel ignores him and looks at me. "I don't want to see it."
Nathaniel walks into the living room wearing no pants. "Mommy....". Nathaniel looks down at his penis, smiles, and motions to it. "My penis." He looks up at me with pride.
Ever since Nathaniel was a baby we've modified some of the lyrics of Peace Like A River and personalized a little lullabye for Nathaniel. "I've got love for Nathaniel, I've got love for Nathaniel, I've got love for Nathaniel in my soul." One night I was lying in bed with him and he started singing in his sweet voice, "I've got love for Mommy, I've got love for Mommy, I've got love for Mommy in my 'so'." My heart melted.
